A Sanctuary for Our Seniors

The Story of Sunset Homes

The Challenge:

A Changing Climate For the residents of Sunset Homes, our community’s shifting weather was becoming more than a conversation—it was a threat to their well-being. During the peak of summer, living spaces became dangerously hot, and in the winter, outdated heating systems meant rising costs for seniors living on fixed incomes. Our elders, who spent their lives building this community, found their comfort and safety at risk in the place they called home.

Our Forever Fund Answers the Call:

When the call for help came, the Powell River Community Foundation was ready to act. By combining the steady growth of our donor-supported funds with strategic partnerships, we were able to provide a $65,000 grant. This wasn’t just a transaction; it was a promise kept. We didn’t just want to fix a problem for a season—we wanted to provide a permanent solution that reflected the dignity our seniors deserve.

The Lasting Legacy Today, Sunset Homes is a place of year-round sanctuary. The installation of high-efficiency heat pumps has transformed daily life for dozens of local seniors:

  • Safety & Comfort: No matter how high the summer temperatures climb, our elders remain protected in climate-controlled safety.
  • Peace of Mind: Lower energy bills mean more resources for essentials like food and medicine, providing financial breathing room for those on fixed incomes.
  • The Forever Gift: These units will serve the residents for years to come—a living example of how a gift to the Foundation continues to “give back” long after it is first planted.
